Yoshida’s Sand in the City is the primary fundraiser and community outreach opportunity for Kids on the Block. Yoshida’s Sand in the City 2008, the 13th annual sand sculpting benefit for Kids on the Block, will be held July 18th – 20th at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. On Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than 450 tons of sand will be sculpted into giant sculptures by local companies and organizations.

Stumptown Challenge! ($40) July 19th 2008

What is the Stumptown Challenge?

The Stumptown Challenge is a race that tests body and mind. Teams of two will solve clues and visit twelve checkpoints scattered throughout Portland. There are no problem-solving restrictions, but travel is limited to foot and TriMet. The first team to successfully photograph itself at eleven of the twelve checkpoints and make it back to base wins.

Registration is $40 per team before July 5th, $50 before July 19th, and $60 the day of.

Pedalpalooza is 2+ weeks of bikey fun. With 211 events, most organized by individuals, bikers of all persuasions are likely to find many events of interest. Nearly all events are free.

If you’re big into biking events this sounds fun. I have never participated in it. I am going to do at least one event this year. Check the event summaries page after the event to see how fun this event turned out to be.

Mt. Tabor Doggie Challenge!

I went to the waterfront festival yesterday. I paid five dollars to get in and thought that wasn’t such a bad price. Well, I was walking through and saw this exotic animal tent. I walked into the tent and saw people taking pictures with a HUGE yellow snake for five dollars. I thought wow that is something I would never do so I got in line. I was getting my picture taken and looked over and saw a baby white bengal sleeping and said to the guy “I would rather get a picture with that cute little baby” he said “come back in ten minutes.” My heart started pounding I was so excited. By the time ten minutes was up they had a line out the door of people waiting to pay ten dollars to take a picture with a baby tiger. That was a once in a lifetime chance and worth the five extra dollars I gave the lady. All the money goes towards saving endangered animals so it’s worth a few extra bucks to me! GO GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN WITH A BABY TIGER.

If you have kids this is an amazing experience for them. The children that were waiting in line all had the most amazing looks on their faces anticipating this experience.

I just went down and talked with the person in charge of the baby tiger exhibit (6/2/08 3:44pm). The woman said the tiger just got some shots and most likely will only be available on Friday and Saturdays for pictures. She said the best time to get a picture will be around 11:15am on those days. After the 11:15am photo’s the baby tiger will get a bottle and then the baby usually sleeps for a couple hours. Have fun!

Location: McCubbin’s Gulch Recreation Area in Bear Springs, Oregon

This is being called a kick a*s adventure.

I don’t know anyone who has done the McCubbin’s Gulch Scramble and I most certainly have not participated in it myself. Perhaps this year my little feet will find a way to be a part of this BIG ADVENTURE.

The route normally runs 5-6 miles with the winning victim participant finishing in about 45-minutes. The average finisher will take about 1:15 – 1:30 with some being on the course nearly 2:00.

SEATTLE TO PORTLAND (STP) BICYCLE RIDE!

I have not signed up yet but I do intend to. The STP does in fact intimidate me a bit. I am not certain I can hang with the BIG DOGS YET! The ride is 200 miles. You have the option to finish in one day or two. If I sign up it will be for the two day challenge this year with the goal of doing it in one day next year.

This events seems similar to the BlackBerry Curve Challenge (I haven’t done either YET)! They may have nothing in common other than being in Portland. They both sound so fun and I can’t wait!

Portland Rose Festival Starlight Run 30th Anniversary! May 31st

How far will people go to be in a parade? If they’re runners in the Starlight Run, the answer is 3.1 miles! And, with more than 4,000 runners projected for this year’s event, the Starlight Run is definitely the largest fun-run in Oregon. It’s also the most FUN fun-run, with participants vying not only to break the tape, but also to win prizes for best individual or group costumes.

This will be the first time I participate in this run. I will of course write about it after I complete it! If you’re looking for something to do Satuday May 31st around 8pm this is it. The costume judging starts at 7:15pm. I have heard that this is very fun event to participate in! For more info go to:
